Have you ever seen those memes that say, "Tell me you are old without saying your age." and you are supposed to mention something that young people would never understand.
Something like, "I used to party on a party-line" (That is an old-school type of joint phone line shared by many families, for those who aren't old. I never had one, but my mom did!)
What if I asked you, "Tell me what you stand for without telling me what you stand for!"
Can you point to something very obvious in your practice that clients would see and understand immediately what you stand for?
I went into a restaurant to order take-out pizza, and the receipt had a line that said "2% for Kitchen Staff Livable Wage." It cost me $0.74 to pay the extra to allow those who don't get tips to be able to make a decent living. Sazza Restaurant
I saw that and immediately knew that these are my kind of people. This is my kind of business, and I'm happy to pay my $0.74 and know that my pizza was made by people who can pay their bills!
Is it a coincidence that I buy makeup from a company, Thrive Causemetics, that gives away one product for every one sold to women in need? Or that I get excited to rock my over-priced Rothy's shoes made from recycled water bottles?
No! In Seth Godin's words, "People like me do things like this." People like me buy things like these. People like me work with businesses like these. These things are ATTRACTIVE to me.
Tell me what you stand for without telling me what you stand for!
Let's talk about how your purpose can be expressed in the way you do business.
-How about the advisor who donates $250 to a different charity every single week!?
Tom Spray-Fry!
-Or the advisor leading the charge to get Redtail to add more inclusive pronouns!?
Myra Slaybaugh!
-How about the advisor who intentionally seeks to work with business owners of color and sits on the board of a financial literacy organization for at-risk kids!? Roberto Duran!
These advisors don't have to yell from the rooftops about their purposes. They live them. They are them. They exemplify them. And, because they believe in them, they do find ways to communicate their purposes to their clients via newsletters, social media, and their websites.
What is your purpose, and what are you doing in your business to show your community exactly who you are?
With Purpose,
-Lucila
